Conduit bodies are essential components in electrical systems, providing access points for wire routing, splicing, and maintenance. They are classified primarily by their shape and the direction in which the wire exits. Below are the five main types, each designated by one or two letters that describe both the shape and the wire exit direction:
- LB (L-shaped Back)
- Description: The LB conduit body has an L-shape, with a single conduit hub located at the back.
- Application: Commonly used for routing wires between the inside and outside of walls, offering a 90-degree change in direction.
- LL (L-shaped Left)
- Description: The LL conduit body is also L-shaped, but with a conduit hub on the left side.
- Application: Routes wires toward the left side, making it ideal for installations where wiring needs to exit in that direction.
- LR (L-shaped Right)
- Description: Similar to the LL, the LR conduit body has its conduit hub on the right side.
- Application: It is used for routing wires toward the right, providing a mirror image of the LL configuration.
- C (Straight-through)
- Description: The C conduit body has two conduit hubs aligned on the same axis.
- Application: It is used for straight-through wiring, where no change in direction is required. It is often chosen for providing inspection access within the raceway system.
- T (T-shaped)
- Description: The T conduit body features three conduit hubs, forming a T shape.
- Application: It allows electricians to merge wires from two different directions or split them into two separate paths.
Classification by Connection Type
In addition to shape and wire exit direction, conduit bodies are categorized based on how they connect to conduits:
- Threaded Type
- Description: Designed for use with threaded conduits such as Rigid Steel Conduit (RSC) or Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC).
- Application: Provides a secure, threaded connection, commonly used in industrial and outdoor settings.
- Set-screw Type
- Description: Utilized with non-threaded conduits like Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT), secured with set screws.
- Application: Offers a quicker, tool-based connection without threading, often used in indoor environments.
- Combination Type
- Description: A combination conduit body features both threaded and set-screw hubs.
Application: Allows connectivity between different conduit types, such as EMT and Rigid conduits, providing versatility in wiring systems.
